  10. BSIM is a program  that college and high school biology instructors will
  11. find especially interesting.  For classrooms with PCs, BSIM can simulate
  12. pseudoecological systems to be used as analogs to actual biological     
  13. systems. The model for the program is an aquatic ecosystem, but it is   
  14. intended that generalized features of this  ecosystem  be used to       
  15. conceptualize a broader range of ecosystems.                            
  16.                                                                         
  17. Providing basic subject matter is covered in class, the program provides
  18. fun, illustrative learning reinforcement, and encourages mental         
  19. manipulation of conceptual elements well beyond calculation-phase       
  20. minutes.  The $29.95 registration fee will net the user technical data  
  21. and program utilities to assist program analysis, and an experimenter's 
  22. manual for ten experiments.

  24. BSIM allows sampling of stagnant and circulated flask environments open 
  25. or closed to oxygen and carbon-dioxide atmospheres, choice of light and 
  26. dark, depth, and choice of sample location according to grid.           
  27. Apparently, temperature and Ph are assumed constant and optimum.        
  28. Essentially, "pseudogenomes" are intended to be abstractions of real    
  29. organisms with morphology and physiology determined by 13 "mutable"     
  30. pseudogenome elements which can be set by the user.  Organism metabolism
  31. is intended to utilize a simplified carbon chemistry, and the organisms 
  32. are apparently capable of reproduction or reduction with sampling       
  33. possible at each generation.  The program allows for new organisms or   
  34. "reseeding" of old ones at first generation, and a readout of solution  
  35. elements for the sample taken.
